As soul and jazz stations went off the air one by one, there was still Emmit Powell and his Saturday morning gospel show on KPFA-FM in Berkeley.
"The Gospel Experience" ran from 6 to 9 a.m., and anybody who wanted to be sure a church or community announcement got out there with the voice of authority would be in front of the station when Powell stepped out of his silver Mercedes - his perm always teased and coiffed - at 5:45 a.m.
