Why are we paying Boeing billions to send jobs away?
(April 6, 2017) — As a young girl, my daughter had a fear of flying. She overcame this through a thorough study of airplanes and landed on the 737 as her preferred means of transportation in the air. So naturally, she asked for a Boeing T-shirt for a present. It says, “If it’s not Boeing, I’m not going!” So let’s talk about Boeing. You might expect that Boeing would treat Everett as the jewel in the crown of its operations. That is certainly what the Boeing management led legislators and the governor to believe when the company demanded first a $3.2 billion tax concession from the state, and then another $8.7 billion What did this recent tax giveaway to Boeing get us? A loss of close to 12,000 jobs, 15 percent of the…

These are the hidden titans of Mass. marijuana
You can’t own more than three pot shops, but these companies are testing the limit — and bragging about it By Spotlight Team members Beth Healy, Dan Adams, Nicole Dungca, Andrew Ryan, Todd Wallack and editor Patricia Wen. It was written by Healy. March 21, 2019 First in a series Robert Leidy, scion of a wealthy Palm Beach family, struck a serious pose that night before officials in the small town of Athol. In a dark suit and tie, he fixed his gaze on a careful script. There was no mention of the deep-pocketed investors backing him or the fishing yacht his company, Sea Hunter Therapeutics, was named after. Leidy talked about his lofty mission: to help a nonprofit business grow marijuana in an old tool mill there, and sell the product at…
Illinois puts ‘fair tax’ measure on 2020 ballot
On Monday, the Illinois House approved a constitutional amendment to ask voters if the state’s flat tax structure for income taxes should be abolished. The action will let Illinois voters decide in November 2020 whether to adopt progressive tax rates requiring taxpayers making at least $250,000 a year to pay higher rates than the current 4.95 percent flat tax. If passed, the fair tax structure is expected to raise about $3 billion for public services. This legislation is a cornerstone of the Illinois Federation of Teachers’ Fund Our Future campaign.

LONG STORY SHORT WITH LESLIE WILCOX Florence “Johnny” Frisbie: Life Lessons from Pukapuka Atoll
Most of the time, it was a kind of challenge that was exciting. It was. I think it’s because, you know, we live on small islands, and we go out on the reef, and the big waves wash suddenly, and we’re down and struggling to get up again. And it was perhaps that background and upbringing that we had this great sense of excitement, you know. And yet, it’s partly survival Florence “Johnny” Frisbie grew up living far away from the comforts of a traditional population center, surviving on whatever food a small coral atoll and the ocean might provide. The odyssey of Johnny Frisbie, next, on Long Story Short. Long Story Short with Leslie Wilcox is Hawai‘i’s first weekly television program produced and broadcast in high definition. Aloha mai kakou. I’m Leslie…
