What's Happening at First Presbyterian Church
This coming Sunday, the Gospel reading in the lectionary (John 2:13-22) is the one about Jesus driving the money lenders out of the temple. It's one of the few places in the Bible where Jesus gets angry, and I believe it's the only one where he is so demonstrative in his anger This week, I'm going to be thinking about Jesus's anger and response t0 what he considered a desecration of His Father's House and juxtapose it against all of the things our politicians and various interest groups are angry about and how they are choosing to respond. I have been so disheartened by the tone that has been set in our country with all the angry and hateful rhetoric being so easily tossed about these days. It just seems so not-who-we-are-called-to-be. But…
Willow Creek Church: Winter Springs, FL > Care Ministries at Willow Creek
Our Minister of Member Care, Jeff Smith, has done a wonderful work in encouraging and equipping a brand new team of care givers at Willow Creek Church. On behalf of our church family, these newly commissioned team members will work alongside our elders, deacons, and women's ministry leaders in leading our care efforts among members of our congregation and community They will do so in manifold ways, from visiting the home bound and those in the hospital to praying with the hurting and guiding them toward tangible expressions of care (meals, rides to medical appointments, emergency repairs, and more). Everyday, these care team members will help us better realize the call to care for one another…
What Would Happen if the Church Tithed?
The church of today is not great at at giving. This isn’t exactly news. But it is a statistical fact: - Tithers make up only 10-25 percent of a normal congregation. - Only 5 percent of the U.S. tithes, with 80 percent of Americans only giving 2 percent of their income. - Christians are only

How to Make Sense of Livestreaming Violence
“Did you hear about the 12-year-old girl in Georgia who livestreamed her suicide?” It took me a moment to grasp the question a church member had just asked me. Wait, what? My brain whirled trying to accept the concept. This was a passing question in the hallway of my church one Sunday morning Now, being the youth director at my church I frequently receive shocking information about young people and am asked to get involved. But there was something about this question that hit me differently—something that has left me with a terrible churning in my gut for the past few days. This instance isn’t the only livestreaming violence we’ve seen, and it’s not even the most recent. In the past week or so, the internet has been scandalized by a man who…

What Saved Kirk Franklin’s Marriage
According to Tammy: prayer and counseling “I think that as a culture we kind of shy away from counseling and therapy, but it’s important,” she said. “It says that you love each other enough, love yourself enough to get the help that you need. And so we’ve done counseling; it has saved our marriage. We pray together and I’m not only his wife, but I’m his girlfriend. “When you have a girlfriend and [you all] are at odds with each other, it just [doesn’t] feel right, it just hurts you,” she continued. “But sometimes we’re not like that with our spouses, but if you have a friend in your spouse, then my heart aches when we get into it. I’m like, “OK I’m ready to talk through this, let’s get back.” This isn’t…
