Summit Woods Baptist Church: Lee's Summit, MO > Mid-Service Comments
February 14, 2017 by Brett Harris Please find below Brett Harris' notes from the Mid-service comments this past Sunday. Evaluate your heart against Scripture in understanding Jesus' purpose in his first coming and how that impacts your view of our purpose in following him Acts 7 tells us of Stephen's stoning; the first martyr of the Christian faith. At the beginning of Acts 8, we see that a man named Saul is approving of the execution and that Saul himself was ravaging the church - he was doing whatever he could to stop the church. Later in Acts we read that Saul was heading to Damascus, still breathing threats and murder against believers. That's some pretty strong language. His anger and hatred of Christ and his church is strong and it motivates his…
What to do when your church changes
These days in my retirement ministry, most of the churches where I’m invited to preach have these things in common… –Almost no man wears a necktie or suit. –On the platform you find all kinds of musical instruments. –Huge screens are mounted on the front walls, where the words of songs and scripture are projected. –Many people in the congregation read Scripture from their phones. –Worship leaders are often wearing jeans and sneakers. –In the announcements, you hear of mission trips to foreign countries, regardless of the size of the church. –Fewer and fewer hymns are being sung, and when the old ones are brought out, they’re given new treatments. Willing Love can’t be compelled. If you are being forced to do something, then it can’t be loving. Imagine Jesus going to the cross because God the Father made him do it. Would…

Why Baptists Are Leaving the Local Church
Tom Cheyney & Rodney Harrison, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary discuss issues that churches are facing today. People don't since God's presence, they're looking for Him. They're looking for a sense of joy, a sense of vision, a sense of purpose and a sense of mission. Click the logo to listen
10 Commandments for a Friendly Church
Speak to People. A cheerful word of greeting can make the day brighter for anyone. Some folks would never speak unless spoken to first. It would be a quiet world if everyone refused to speak until spoken to Give Folks a Friendly Smile. A smile costs so little and does so much good. Your smile is your greatest asset. A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken. Proverbs 15:13 Call Folks By Name. The sound of a friendly voice calling your own name is sweet music. It is a tune anyone can play. Be Friendly and Helpful. If you want friends, be friendly. Don’t build walls around yourself. Build bridges. A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend…
