A Dead Man named R.M. Starbuck wrote some of my favorite (and most useful!) old books. His books are so useful because he employed a question-and-answer format that appealed to the trade way back when, and to me today. I like it when I can quickly find an answer, don't you
When I wrote How Come? I followed the same Q&A format. I wanted to share some secrets about hot water heating, and I wanted to do it in the same way the…

Phase-change material has been around for a while and has been getting more attention lately as it finds its way into wallboard and other surfaces that can absorb, hold, and then release excess heat into a room. Now that same concept appears inside this table . Thoughts
I loved this story , and not just because of the unusual repurposing of a grand old building, but also to find that the owner, Marc Whitacre, keeps a copy of my book, The Lost Art…
What might have been
There was once a very large fund dedicated to research in the science of hydronic heating. That money got away from our industry, which is sad, but it makes for a good story. Here 'tis. Read it and weep
Interesting developments in England
I like the way they're using the waste heat from the famous Sheffield steel plant to add what would otherwise be wasted Btus to the district-heating system. Lends new meaning to Team GB! Here's the story…
You have to know what it costs you to be in business before you can know how much you should charge. That's logical, but sometimes, this business is anything but logical. Here's a great example of that

Most of the buildings you visit are probably older than you are because, let's face it, America is a heating museum. Many of those buildings have hydronic heating systems that have been touched by lots of hands over the years and it's your job to get them working efficiently. So let's talk about how those classic hydronic systems work, where they came from, how they've changed over the years, and what you can do right now to get the most out of them…

Magnetic dirt removal in hydronic heating and cooling systems is a hot topic these days. Check out this short video, showing how the Caleffi 5465 Series DIRTMAG works.
To learn more about magnetic dirt removal technology and magnetite, that nasty "boiler ink" that experienced hydronic service technicians know well, check out Caleffi's May 2015 Magnetic Separation in Commercial Hydronic Systems Coffee with Caleffi webinar.

A circulator pump is a device that pumps substances like water, slurries and gases in a closed circuit setting. What's the best approach for this job
The neat thing about hydronic radiant heating is that you have loads of choices. There's really no one "right" way. You can get pretty creative with this stuff. For instance, have you ever considered radiantly heating a kitchen countertop? If the folks are doing well enough to afford granite, I'll bet they'd be receptive if you tell them that their new countertop doesn't have to feel like a slab at the County Morgue. Or how about…
