Three Brighton High School publications once again earned top honors at the Empire State School Press Association’s conference on Nov. 3. The awards ceremony, which was held at Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications, recognizes excellence in student publications. The 2017 awards reflect the students’ work during the 2016-17 school year.
Galaxy (BHS’ literary magazine), Trapezoid (BHS’ newspaper), and Crossroads (BHS’ yearbook) all received Gold Awards. Many staff members of each publication also received individual awards.
Galaxy received gold award for All-Around Best Literary Magazine. Individual gold awards went to: Catherine Wu for Artwork/Illustration; Lydia Lake for Cover Design; and Alice Weber, Addison Farrell, and Elizabeth Cumbo for Poetry. Silver awards went to Markyana Kelly for Artwork/Illustration; Farrell and Lake for Layout (Facing Pages); and Robin Eassa for Photograph. Bronze awards went to Jordan Meeker for Artwork/Illustration; Rachel McLauchlin for Non-Fiction; Farrell and Cumbo for Layout (Facing Pages); Cumbo for Layout (Single Page); Farrell for Photograph; Shivani Singh for Poetry (Division A); and McLauchlin and Lake for Specialized Content; Honorable Mentions went to Harrison Atwater and Farrell for Layout (Facing Pages); and Atwater and Olga Shvetsova for Photograph. Trapezoid received gold awards for Best Printed Newspaper, Best Online Newspaper, Most Improved Publication. Individual gold awards went to the designers for Portfolio; Trapezoid editorial staff for Editorial Writing; Alex Liu for Feature Writing; Neel Bhagwat and Raghav Devarakonda for Front Page Design (Portfolio); Savannah Frederick for News Photograph; Jyla Serfino for Personality/Interview Story; and Catherine Wu and Roei Dery for Special Topic/Event Coverage. Silver awards went to Carver Kozlowski for Editorial Columnist (Portfolio); Trapezoid Editorial Staff for Editorial Page or Online; Serfino for Feature Writing; Emily Han for News Photograph; and Wu for Special Topic/Event Coverage. Bronze awards went to Madelaine Hastings for Feature Writing; Oona McCormack and Sachi Nutulapati for Feature Layout; Wu for Picture Layout/Picture Story; Jeremy Markus for Review Writing (Portfolio); and Sushmita Patil (Sports News); Honorable Mentions went to Trapezoid editorial staff for Editorial Writing; Trapezoid editorial staff for Editorial Page or Online; Aelis Spiller for News Story; Hastings for Pesonality/Interview Story; and Celia Fox for Sports Feature.
