Kamiak sophomore wins 4 events
Courtesy of: Jen Dumas Simone Dumas-Guzman, a sophomore at Kamiak High School, took first place in her age group in the beam, vault, bars and all-around events at the Washington State Optional Championships March 17-20 in Vancouver. Dumas-Guzman, a Level 8 gymnast, also took third in the floor event and was fourth across all age groups. She was one of eight gymnasts selected to represent Washington at the Region 2 Championships April 7-9 in Boise, Idaho.

'Dixie Mafia' member Billy Sunday Birt dies
Birt died sometime overnight Thursday, according to his son, Billy Stonewall "Stoney" Birt. He was 79. Stoney Birt said Friday night he will be planning funeral arrangements Saturday. Billy Sunday Birt was convicted of the 1972 murder of his former "Dixie Mafia" associate and Winder resident Donald Chancey as well as the 1973 slayings of an elderly couple in Wrens. He is reputed to have been involved in more than 50 murders during the 1960s and 1970s.
