Though he signed the bill last month, Governor Greg Abbott held a public ceremony on Thursday to sign SB 1978. The Metropolitan Police Department is currently investigating after a juvenile male and a man were shot and killed in Northeast D. C. Friday evening. Police say the shooting happened in the 1100 block of Queen Street, NE. According to police, there is no lookout at this time. This is a developing story that will be updated once more information is available.
A Pennsylvania school district is warning that children could end up in foster care if their parents do not pay overdue school lunch bills. The letters sent recently to about 1,000 parents in Wyoming Valley West School District have led to complaints from parents and a stern rebuke from Luzerne County child welfare authorities. The district says that it is trying to collect more than $20,000 and that other methods to get parents to pay have not been successful.

The Metropolitan Police Department needs assistance in locating a missing 16-year-old girl from Northeast. Brionna Marie McCoy was last seen at 6:30 p. m. in the 1400 block of West Virginia Avenue, on Thursday, July 18. McCoy is described as a 5-foot 9-inches, 135-pound black female with dark complexion, shoulder-length black hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing blue jeans, a white t-shirt with "1985" written across the front in large red numbers, and black and white "Vans" sneakers.
